Wrappers – Creating a Different “Look”

Your Action Network (AN) mass emails and the landing pages for actions can have a selection of “wrappers” that determine how they will look to the recipient. A wrapper is akin to stationery or letterhead — it usually has a logo at the top and text at the bottom. Your message goes in the space between.

Wrappers are chosen AFTER you target the email.

You create a selection of wrappers using the tools found when you click “Begin Organizing” on you AN dashboard.  By default, the “Built-in Email Wrapper” with the Action Network logo is included in your choices. When each FDPA county group is provisioned, we all a FDPA square header for emails, and a FDPA banner-style header for landing pages. These are usually named “Syndicated Wrapper” because they follow the same style for all the FDPA county sites.

Fools Rush In …

Unexpected consequences can result when you customize your wrapper.  We forget that our emails will be seen on every imaginable device that can open an email or web page.  What looks good on a PC may look different on an iPhone.  Our square logo looks good on the hand-held devices that many, perhaps most, people use to scan their email.  Please know that creating your own wrapper is great, but you must then test how it looks on different classes of devices.

For those who are proficient in coding with HTML, it is also possible to modify the styles that govern how the body text is displayed. The same cautions apply about testing your new code on different types of devices.

Blank Wrapper + Photo = Custom Look

An easy way to provide a special look for an event header is to create a wrapper with no logo.  When you create the body text of your email(s) you can then insert a photo at the top of your email that will be seen as your header and create a theme for communications about the event. Small type and fine details are not phone friendly.  Your photo should be at least 400 pixels wide, and not more than 1100 pixels wide.  The height should be 2/3 of the width or more.
